Legendary house music vocalist Kathy Brown to release album on Glitterbox for cancer charity

Glitterbox is releasing an album to raise funds for Kathy Brown’s chosen cancer charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The legendary house vocalist was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, which has since spread to her brain, late last year. A GoFundMe has since been set up by Brown’s daughter Chanta Joyner.

The 19-track compilation, titled ‘Legacy’, collects numerous classics from Brown’s repertoire, alongside four new remixes and edits from “leading house, disco, funk and soul producers” including Michael Gray, DJ Spen and Sophie Lloyd. Among the tracks included are Soul Central’s ‘Strings Of Life (Stronger On My Own)’ and ‘Joy’, which made it to number four on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1999.

In a statement about the release, Defected’s A&R manager Seamus Haji said: “When we found out that Kathy had stage four cancer, she told us that she had never had an album out before and that she’d love to have a body of work in one place. So, we set about collating some of her strongest releases, including four new exclusive remixes from fans of her work including DJ Spen, Michael Gray, Sophie Lloyd and Moplen. I’m excited about this Glitterbox release for one of the fiercest house divas of our time.”

The label will also host an event on 18th July at Defected’s London HQ to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Pick up tickets from Resident Advisor.

In January, UK label Toolroom released charity single ‘Turn Me Deeper’ from Wh0, Mark Knight & James Hurr, featuring Brown’s vocals. All earnings were donated to the fundraising effort for Brown.
