Jeff Mills announces ‘Live At Liquid Room – Tokyo’ 30th anniversary tour
Jeff Mills is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his legendary ‘Live At Liquid Room – Tokyo’ mix CD with a worldwide tour.
The international tour will take in stops at London’s fabric (8th November), Osaka’s Joule (14th November), Hong Kong’s 宀 Club (21st November), Paris’s Fvtvr (5th December), and, of course, Tokyo’s Liquidroom (15th November).
It has also been confirmed that the London and Paris shows will include a film screening featuring unseen material from the original 1995 Tokyo performance. Recorded on two turntables and a reel-to-reel tape machine, the three-hour set remains one of the finest testaments to Mills’ formidable DJ talents on record. It was also the first time the Detroit legnd played his landmark track, ‘i9’, on 10” reel-to-reel tape.
‘i9’ was recently re-released via Mills’ Axis Records as a 12” picture disc vinyl with the track on the A-side and commentary from Mills on the B-side.
Speaking about the mix, Mills commented: “I knew I needed to have something that would end any question of whether Techno Music had arrived. I wanted to have something that marked the end and the beginning of something else. A new way to think about dance music.”
The mix was cut down to 68 minutes and 38 songs before its first official release in 1996. The mix was never officially made available on streaming services, and full details about an upcoming full re-release are yet to be revealed.
In May, Mills replaced Carl Cox as headliner at Movement Detroit, which he promoted with billboards emblazoned with the words “This Is Techno” that appeared around the city. Alongside the words, the billboards depicted two futuristic images side by side. According to a press statement written by Mills, they were intended to provoke discussion and “sharpen our sense to detect what is Techno and what is not.”
This month, Jeff Mills will host a music, film and art residency, Star Chronicle, in Detroit.
