Richie Hawtin announces DEX EFX X0X

New for 2024, DEX EFX X0X will debut exclusively across two shows at global stature festivals Movement Festival Detroit and Sónar Barcelona.

As two of the most important events in the dance music calendar; Movement Festival and Sónar each hold significant historical precedence where Richie Hawtin has premiered new show concepts over the last three decades and experimented with unique ways of performing, including Plastikman Live’ (2010) and his CLOSE concept (2017).

Anchored within the immersive fluidity in digital manipulation that Hawtin’s DJ performances have become synonymous with, DEX EFX X0X builds upon the concepts of his ‘Decks, EFX & 909” series of compilations from 1995 – 2005, using all the performance tools available today. DEX EFX XOX demonstrates equally the early foundations and future of DJing, representing an exciting evolutionary step in Richie Hawtin’s lifelong commitment to the development of the electronic music scene.

“Moving away from the current trend of shows giving the priority to the image rather than sound, DEX EFX X0X brings the audience back into an immersive sound & lighting experience. More club than concert. DEX EFX X0X continues my personal exploration of improvisation using modern performance technology resulting in a unique sonic narrative for each and every show.” Richie Hawtin

A genuine original and futurist, Richie Hawtin’s critical acclaim spans the creative realm of the fine art community to the technological vanguard and his Plastikman live shows have continually set new standards of visual art and technological innovation. As a performing artist, he is constantly pushing conceptual frontiers, and always moving the scene and its sound forward.

At every turn since in a long illustrious career, his position as a visionary technologist has been established with a series of innovations; pioneered new ways of performing, from early experiments with digital audio and visual media. He co-designed his own DJ mixer (the MODEL 1 from his own PLAYdifferently company); the Bullfrog educational synthesiser (with Erica Synths); created numerous innovative music technology apps; co-founder of the dominating electronic digital retail platform, Beatport; and is largely considered responsible for the shift from physical to digital DJing.

“Richie has consistently stood at the forefront of electronic music, always pushing the boundaries of sound and setting the standard for live performances. We’re excited to host the debut of Richie’s DEX EFX X0X performance – Movement attendees are going to be in for a truly unique experience from one of the most innovative artists of our generation.” Jason Huvaere, Paxahau co-founder / Festival Director, Movement Music Festival

“Richie Hawtin never stops moving forward, he’s always exploring how he can use technology to evolve his music and sound, as well as how it’s presented in front of an audience. It’s why we’re always keen to have him at Sónar: we know that he brings something new and different to the stage every time.” Enric Palau, Co-Director, Sónar Festival

Always sharing these artistic and creative leaps through his shows, Richie Hawtin welcomes as many as he can to ideas and experiences that would have seemed pure science fiction when he began his career as a DJ and producer in the emerging techno scene in Detroit. It seems only fitting, therefore, that his return to live performance with DEX EFX X0X will be performed at two of the world’s most prestigious festival stages.
