Zen Records, longstanding North London record store, to shut after three decades
North London record store Zen Records is closing its doors after nearly three decades in business.
The family of shop founder Robert Douglas announced the Tottenham business closure in a statement posted to Instagram at the end of June. “Now, due to health reasons, Robert is stepping back from the shop”, they wrote. They said Douglas would continue Zen Records’ legacy of promoting rare groove, reggae, R&B, soul and more through his Discogs shop, where his 500-plus record collection will still be for sale.
“We’re writing with a mix of sadness, admiration, and a lot of basslines, in the hope that you can help us celebrate a true Tottenham legend”, Douglas’ family wrote of his contribution to the local crate-digging community. “…Robert came from the vibrant sound system scene, playing out regularly before deciding to dedicate his life to sharing music instead of spinning it. With a passion and knowledge that only true connoisseurs possess, he opened Zen Records — the rest is local music history.”
Zen Records will be hosting two further closing livestream events to celebrate Douglas’ career on 9th August and 6th September. From 1 to 5 PM BST, Zen friends, customers and like-minded DJs will spin from the store. Tune in via Zen Records’ Mixcloud.
