Ukrainian electronic artist Heinali live-streams modular set from bomb shelter: Watch

Ukrainian sound artist and composer Oleg Shpudeiko, who makes music as Heinali, live-streamed a modular set from a bomb shelter in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Saturday.

The stream saw Shpudeiko play on a modular system that he’d managed to salvage when evacuating his home amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The patch he used was said to have been “loosely based on the seventh-century polyphonic organa of the Notre Dame school and earlier medieval polyphony”, and was also being used on his new album, ‘Organa’, which is currently unfinished as a result of the war.

All proceeds raised from those who donated while or after watching the show are being split between the Ukrainian army and official humanitarian aid organisations. The stream was said to be the first in a planned series of live-streamed concerts featuring Ukrainian musicians performing the work of Ukrainian and foreign composers.
