M.I.A. shares new single, ‘The One’, reveals new album title: Listen
M.I.A. has shared a new single, ‘The One’, and revealed the title of her upcoming album.
The London rapper and producer unveiled the new track produced by Rex Kudo and T-Minus this week. Listen below.
Accompanying the single are some initial details about the follow-up to 2016’s ‘AIM’. Set for release via Island Records, ‘MATA’ will be released in the coming months. A release date for the album – M.I.A.’s sixth studio LP to date – is to be confirmed.
“I think there’s a bit of a battle on the record,” she told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe. “There is a bit of a clash, but the clash is, like, your ego and spirituality. Those are the clashes because, as a musician, you need some ego, otherwise you can’t do it. Also the genre of music that—genres I should say—is all very much like egocentric.”
“It’s not like I’m an artist that came from gospel or something,” she continued. “For me, it was, like, to have that journey, and also, like, it was a significant time to discuss like Islamophobia… talking about wars in the Middle East and things like that.”
Since the release of ‘AIM,’ M.I.A. has released tracks including ‘OHMNI 202091’. Back in 2019, she performed at an event protesting the extradition of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
