Ibiza’s iconic Bora Bora club to shut after 40 years

Ibiza’s iconic beach club, Bora Bora, has announced it will permanently close after 40 years.

Based in Playa d’en Bossa — home to venues including Ushuaïa and HÏ — the legendary party spot made the announcement on social media, confirming it will bow out after a farewell event on 15th October, with the final season, labelled ‘The Last Chance to Dance’, boasting a number of high profile residencies such as The Zoo Project, and Nic Fanciulli’s Dance!

First opened in 1982 by Florentino Arzuaga, Bora Bora was the first beach club on Ibiza, and built a reputation as the island’s most significant dancefloor for free events with A-list artists. During its tenure, names including Danny Tenaglia, David Morales, Todd Terry, Smoking Jo, Sister Bliss, and Claptone have all graced the booth, among countless more.

No specific reason has been given for the impending closure, or the future of the complex itself, which includes outdoor terraces, an apartment building, and pool. However, a report in Diario de Ibiza references redevelopment of both the site and surrounding area.

“Because as goodbye, we want a big party. It’s the end of many stages and we want to celebrate it in style, just like in the old days, without filters. That’s right, this time it’s true. This is the last chance to come and dance with us,” said Bora Bora’s Instagram post. “It’s not yet clear what will arise in this place, but all the news will be released at the end of the season.”

The news comes at an uneasy time for Ibiza’s post-pandemic club scene. This summer — the first in which clubs have been allowed to fully operate since 2019 — has already seen a stream of noise complaints targeting venues, with some forced to temporarily or partially close. Most recently, DC-10, also located in Playa d’en Bossa, had to shut its garden stage to appease neighbours. The club also completely cancelled an event hosted by Carl Cox last week.
