Ibiza tourists face £2,580 fines for breaking on-street alcohol ban in San Antonio
Tourists travelling to Ibiza could be hit with fines of up to £2,580 if they break recently introduced rules relating to consumption of alcohol in the popular San Antonio area.
In May 2024, the government of the Balearic Islands banned on-street drinking and the sale of alcohol in supermarkets between 9:30pm and 8am in party hotspots including including San Antonio in Ibiza, and Playa de Palma and Magaluf in Majorca. Now, it has been reported that potential fines for those caught breaking these rules have risen from between €500 and €1,500 (£430 – £1290) to as much as €3,100 (£2,580). Offenders could also face being reported to their country’s embassy.
Although these alcohol restrictions do not affect bars, restaurants, or clubs, they do affect party boats within one nautical mile of San Antonio.
The rules were introduced to crack down on “anti-social behaviour” and “excessive tourism” in tourist hotspots. The Balearic Islands Tourism Council press officer Luis Pomar said in 2020, when an initial round of restrictions were implemented, that it was hoped the laws would not last forever but that it was necessary to “instil in people how to behave”.
As of last May’s announcement, these new rules will remain in place until 2027.
Shortly after last May’s announcement, Ibiza locals held a protest against overtourism amid increased tensions in Balearic and Canary Islands.
Meanwhile, Pikes and Ibiza Rocks have announced plans for a new venue in San Antonio, and Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza founders to open a new “hyperclub” on the island this summer.
