Massive Attack debut new audiovisual EP, ‘Eutopia’: Listen

Massive Attack have unveiled a new audiovisual EP, ‘Eutopia’, featuring collaborations with Algiers, Saul Williams, and Young Fathers.

Having teased the EP early last week with a string of cryptic social media posts, the iconic trip hop outfit shared three music videos on Friday (10th July).

The EP, which was made during lockdown, tackles topics including the global climate crisis and universal basic income, and features spoken contributions from Christiana Figueres, who wrote the UN Paris Climate Agreement, and economists Guy Standing and Gabriel Zucmam.

Production and writing for the EP’s visual element comes from Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja AKA 3D and filmmaker Euan Dickinson. Additional generative visuals come from AI artist Mario Klingemann.

In a press release about the EP, Massive Attack said: “Lockdown exposed the best aspects and worst flaws of humanity. That period of uncertainty and anxiety forced us to meditate on the obvious need to change the damaging systems we live by. By working with three experts, we’ve created a sonic and visual dialogue around these global, structural issues; taking the form of climate emergency, tax haven extraction and Universal Basic Income.”

“The spirit of this EP, its elements and ideas have nothing to do with naïve notions of an ideal, perfect world, and everything to do with the urgent & practical need to build something better. In this sense, Eutopia is the opposite of spelling mistake.”

Earlier this year, Massive Attack donated £10,000 to The Bristol Food Union’s Feed The Frontline campaign, which aims to provide free meals to NHS staff and other frontline workers during the coronavirus pandemic. Robert Del Naja also released a collection of limited edition prints in aid of the campaign.
