Yvng Jalapeño & Just A Gent Tap Nerve For Rap-Infused "Geekin'"
Yvng Jalapeño & Just A Gent throwdown wall-crumbling bass on “Geekin’,” their collaborative showcase of raw talent alongside Brisbane native Nerve’s assertive raps. “Geekin’” sees Maitland’s tuxedo-clad producer Just A Gent team up once again with fellow Aussie Yvng Jalapeño, with whom he previously collaborated on his 2019 Monstercat single “Drowning.” With over 5 Million streams in the past 12 months on Spotify alone, Nerve has proved himself to be one of the most successful independent hip hop artists in Australia right now.
Stepping away from his usual hip hop and grime beats, enigmatic Brisbane rapper Nerve was drawn into the project after hearing the production. He states, “It’s a really interesting release for me – mostly because around the time it happened, I had a major focus on expanding the styles/genres that I work on within music. I wanted to try my hand at as many different things as I could and then this opportunity seemed to pop up just at the right time. Originally Jalapeño & J.A.G. reached out via e-mail expressing interest. They sent the instrumental through and I had instant flashbacks to my teen years of smashing Dubstep and heavy EDM in headphones while skating/snowboarding and I knew it was going to be huge.”
The collaboration came from a fateful studio session in Brisbane. Yvng Jalanpeño notes, “All three of us linked up in Nerve’s studio one weekend in Brisbane and the rest is history. This was my first time working in the studio with a rapper/vocalist and it was crazy to see how fast Nerve was able to write his bars for this track.” Just A Gent also knew they were onto something when they stepped into the studio saying, “Creating Geekin’ was a blast. There were nonstop vibes all night. It’s just so empowering being in the room with some of my favourite acts coming out of Australia.”
“Geekin’” marks Yvng Jalapeño’s third single this year, following a pair of releases through JAUZ’s Bite This! record label. As many producers do, he began his career making bedroom beats from his early teens onward. His 2016 track “Marty” propelled him to the public eye when it received BBC Radio 1 spins from Bauuer and A-Trak. A few years later he signed to Dim Mak’s New Noise imprint, with the flavorful track “ODI.” “ODI” helped the young beatsmith win a Triple J Unearthed discovery contest, which granted him the opportunity to support What So Not’s Brisbane tour. Alongside his originals, Yvng Jalapeño has become known for his edits and rework ability. He’s been called upon to provide official remixes for the likes of QUIX, Allison Wonderland, UZ and Zeds Dead.
Much like his companion, Just A Gent’s career was propelled by radio at an early age, winning a Triple J Unearthed competition when he was 16. His debut EP, Stories To Tell, went on to gain him 3 high rotation singles on Triple J, went to #1 on Hype Machine and had over 31 million streams. Just A Gent was invited to perform on Triple J’s coveted Like A Version, covering Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘N’ Night” and drawing in over 1.9 million views. Moving full steam ahead into 2020, he recently released the single “Miso & Memories” with Xavi and Akira Flay. Now at the age of 22 and possessing over 145 million on-demand-streams, Just A Gent stands out as a favourite producer amongst Australia’s music scene.
