T.H.E Interview – Meetch

Having honed over a decade of live music experience, the talented Producer and DJ Meetch has developed an expansive skillset, refining his approach to ensure he continues to command stages and deliver powerful studio productions.

With his journey leading him through various creative pursuits, from performing at top venues across the USA to releasing music to curating high-quality episodes of his radio show, ‘Digital Dance Radio,’ Meetch continues to aim high, seeking to share his unique signature style with audiences far and wide whilst pushing the boundaries of his creativity to bring fresh and engaging experiences to his listeners.

On a promising trajectory, we are thrilled to be sitting down with Meetch for this exclusive interview to delve further into his artistry as we look at his journey so far, his creative processes and the ways he continues to keep his approach innovative and inspired.

T.H.E – Can you walk us through your journey into Electronic Music?

Meetch – Electronic Music started for me in 2011 when I went to see a rock band, but the opener, NiTGriT, tossed me into a wormhole of Dubstep and music played by only one person. I was about 16 at the time. I played drums and was in bands for a while growing up, but right then and there, I realised I could be my own person and take the solo journey, and that’s exactly what I did.

T.H.E – What’s the most unique venue you’ve performed at?

Meetch – I will always go back to my first and biggest venue I played at the time, and that is Amazura Music Hall in New York. It was and still is my favourite spot I’ve played. I’m not sure if “unique” is the right way to describe it, but I always play back moments and memories from this venue. It was my first huge club, and I still think about that place even when I get booked at a newer club or venue.

T.H.E – What’s your favourite way to celebrate a success?

Meetch – I like to recap on my videos from my media team mostly! If we’re talking about a success in the music world, I LOVE to look back on the videos and hear the crowd’s reactions and moments that took the crowd by storm. It’s exciting for me to hear what song or what moment really amplified the performance. Then I know to incorporate those songs and moments into the next shows.

T.H.E – How do you keep your performances fresh and exciting?

Meetch – I really love to play certain mashups and singalongs that people connect with. I think a special moment is when everyone is singing to the same song and people share that moment with each other in a big crowd. I think my experience in private events and weddings have allowed me to cross over and merge the two DJ sets together to create something that people don’t hear at the average club.

T.H.E – What’s one thing you’re grateful for today?

Meetch – I’m grateful for the shows I get to play and the steps I get to take to help break through into the EDM world. It’s been 13 years of this, and it’s really starting to shine through. So, I’m grateful that I’ve had the chance to be this person and take big risks and chances in life. It’s vague, but it’s true for me.

T.H.E – What’s one trend in Electronic Music you’re excited about?

Meetch – Hmm, I really like the cross between Dance music and Rock, specifically Heavy Metal. I don’t think that’s necessarily a new trend, but it’s something I’ve really wanted to dive into over the years. I want to have a way to blend a House music set and heavier Rock/Punk Rock moments. Still trying to figure that one out, but who knows!

T.H.E – What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to learn?

Meetch – I would love to learn more instruments, honestly. I played guitar as a kid and faded out of it a bit. I love to play drums, but I would love to jump back into every instrument that I can learn to play live. I want to incorporate more live instruments into my shows.

T.H.E – How do you manage the business side of your career?

Meetch – Depending on what parts of the business side, I do some of it myself. But I also have teams for specific parts of the business world too. It’s overwhelming to do it all on my own, but I have been able to manage multiple businesses at once for a while now.

T.H.E – Do you have any family traditions?

Meetch – I don’t!

T.H.E – How do you handle mistakes during live sets?

Meetch – Ugh, I feel like this question causes specific memories over the years from the live sets. I’ve done some questionable transitions of songs over the years, and if the beat isn’t matching up, I just have to play it off like nothing happened and keep the energy going. If I ask friends and viewers if they heard the mistake later on and they say no, I feel better. But it still replays in my head for weeks!

T.H.E – What’s your favourite visual element to include in your performances?

Meetch – I have actually finally got some insanely professional visuals for my sets and will be growing and adding to those. I was able to get my robot character animated and turn him into a huge visual element. It’s been amazing! I have some awesome examples and clips from my shows on my Instagram. But since I just started using them, there will be more soon!

T.H.E – If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

Meetch – There are a ton of people I’d want to meet, but I really think Madeon would be a big one for me. I have been to so many shows of his over the years and would love to chat more about his journey into music. It’s a little different than me just saying Diplo or Skrillex or something. I want to meet the people who carved a way into the music I love currently. And Madeon was one of them.

T.H.E – What’s one habit that’s improved your productivity?

Meetch – Not rushing to release. Taking time off so I can create a release schedule and do things on a specific basis for maximum growth.

T.H.E – What’s your favourite Electronic Music sub-genre?

Meetch – I have always loved Trap music. I was able to create a Trap-type break in my recent track, “Prophecy.” Though I know there are still shows with this style, I hope it makes a big comeback because I cannot wait to do a full Trap set. That would be an ultimate goal of mine. I started making music with Hip-Hop and Trap, so this would really take me back to the beginning but on a huge scale!

T.H.E – Finally, what’s your process for naming your tracks?

Meetch – I usually have a main vocal or part in the song that titles the track. I want it to make sense so that when people listen to it, they hear why the song is titled that specific title. No need to make it confusing.
