Watch a new documentary on jungle and drum & bass’ early days

A new documentary on the formative years of jungle and drum & bass has been released at select UK cinemas and via the VOD service Doc’n Roll TV. Watch the trailer for The Rest Is History: The Early Days of Jungle & Drum & Bass below.

The Rest Is History: The Early Days of Jungle & Drum & Bass has already previewed in a number of cities, including London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Brighton, and explores the emergence of the sound from UK rave culture in the early ’90s.

Made by Peter Costigan, AKA musician, DJ and producer Stickbubbly, the film uses archive footage — much of which has never been seen before — alongside interviews with pioneers who helped push the sounds forward. Names including Jumpin’ Jack Frost, Ray Keith, Dillinja, Lemon D, Ragga Twins, Micky Finn, Paul Ibiza and G.Q. all help tell the story of the music’s origins, its evolution through pirate radio and eventual development into a worldwide phenomenon.

“I’m really excited to be travelling to the UK to support the release of my film in the UK and Ireland after many years in the making and setbacks due to Covid. Drum n Bass is a huge a huge part of my life and I’m thrilled to have this opportunity with Doc‘n Roll to help educate a new generation of ravers/junglists about where the music came from,” said Costigan.

A full list of cinemas showing the movie can be found on the Doc’n Roll website, alongside access to the on-demand streaming version for £7.

The release comes just weeks after the announcement of a new BBC radio documentary series which traces the initial foundations of drum & bass through to its present day, stadium-filling status.
