Sheffield’s Grub Records shop and wine bar launches Crowdfunder ahead of opening

Sheffield’s Grub Records shop and wine bar launches Crowdfunder ahead of opening

A new record shop and wine bar, Grub Records, will open soon in Sheffield.

The project has been years in the making, according to the team of DJs and promoters behind setting up the space, which they hope can become a hub for record diggers in the area.

To help realise the final part of the opening process, the venue has launched a Crowdfunder campaign with an initial aim of raising £2,500. “Donating here will help us hit the ground running, and allow us to stock the shop with a wider selection of the very best new releases, reissues and compilations, complementing the second-hand stock we’re providing from our collections,” a note shared on the Crowdfunder page said.

“Overall, we’ve donated around £10k’s worth of equipment, records and cash, but helping us get up and running faster will mean a wider range of genres on the shelves from day one, allowing us to diversify the selection of styles available and create a space with something for everyone.”

The space includes a custom DJ booth, designed and built by the Grub Records team themselves, with sound inside provided by a pair of Tannoy Westminster monitors as provided by one of the owners.

The Crowdfunder adds: “Your early support here can help us bring you the very best version of Grub. While we share the space with the wine bar, the revenue from alcohol sales is separate and doesn’t go towards the operation of the record shop – which is usually where a venture like ours generates the majority of its income. This is a positive arrangement for us as it helps us keep costs low for the record shop, but it means we don’t have access to a fast early revenue stream.

“Record shops aren’t typically a goldmine, but their value is in the spaces they create and the local music scenes they add to and support.”

You can support Grub Records as it gets up and running, including by signing up for a membership, here.

In May, a new record shop opened in London as Next Door Records opened a second branch. That new shop followed on from another record store opening in London late last year, in the form of Deptford-based Upside Down Records.

Earlier this year, Sheffield’s Gut Level launched an emergency fundraising appeal to cover final building works required to open a new venue.
