Prague club Ankali “on the edge of closing down”, launches emergency online pop-up shop
Prague club Ankali is at risk of closure.
The key city venue, which opened in 2017 in a former soap factory, announced its uncertain future on Instagram last week, 30th April, writing, “We’re in trouble and we ask for your help.” “We are on the edge of closing down, we’re in deep debt and we won’t make it without you”, they said. “Thus we are reopening Ankali Emergency Store, an online pop-up where you can purchase a selection of clothing, accessories, prints or donate to help us survive.”
The Ankali team cites post-Covid declines in attendance, along with the cost of living crisis affecting once-consistent clubbers as contributing factors to their precarious financial situation.
“As it stands, we’re running an economically unhealthy operation that has not been sustainable for some time”, the statement continued. “We owe a few months’ rent to our — very patient — landlords, and we owe money to several local providers of various services, many of whom are small business entrepreneurs or friends who’ve supported us over the years. If it weren’t for some personal savings, we wouldn’t have made it this far but we can’t continue like this. Not without your help.”
The Anakali Emergency store is open for the next 15 days. Hats, t-shirts, scarves, lighters, soaps and other wares are on offer.
