Nyege Nyege Tapes announces new album from Durban gqom group Phelimuncasi

Durban gqom trio Phelimuncasi have shared details of a brand new album for Nyege Nyege Tapes, called ‘Ama Gogela’.

Spanning 11 tracks, the album sees the trio team up with a cast of producers that includes regular collaborators DJ MP3 and DJ Scoturn, as well as fellow Durban artists DJ Nhlekzin and DJ Ndakx. SVBKVLT-affiliated producer NET GALA also contributes production to two tracks.

The album takes its name from a large bee known for its strength and ferociousness. Expanding on this in a statement, the group said: “We believe our music is irresistible, you can’t sleep or chill while it’s playing. The same thing happens when that bee hits you hard. Once it stings you, you can’t manage it, it’s painful. It’s like our songs – once you listen, you can’t stop.”

‘Ama Gogela’ follows on from Phelimuncasi’s debut for Nyege Nyege Tapes, 2020’s ‘2013-2019’, which introduced the trio’s sound to a wider audience. The group – comprised of vocalists Malathon, Makan Nana and Khera – formed out of the Mlaszi township in 2012.

Last month, Sheffield’s No Bounds festival revealed that Nyege Nyege Tapes would be hosting a label showcase at its 2022 edition later this year.
