Mira Calix, award-winning Warp Records artist and composer, has died

Mira Calix, the award-winning multidisciplinary artist, composer and longtime Warp Records member has died. 

News of the artist born Chantal Passamonte’s passing was confirmed today in a statement by Warp. No cause of death was given. 

“Mira wasn’t only a hugely talented artist and composer,” Warp wrote. “She was also a beautiful, caring human who touched the lives of everyone who had the honour of working with her.” 

Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1970, Passamonte moved to the UK in the ‘90s, where she began working as a press officer for Warp. She became one of the first women to be signed to the label in 1996, and went on to release seven albums, as well as a string of EPs, singles and soundtracks. Her debut LP, ‘one on one’, was released on Warp in 2000. Her most recent album, ‘absent origin’, was released in November 2021. 

Passamonte worked across a variety of creative mediums, and often combined her electronic and classically informed music with works in dance, film,  theatre, opera, film and multi-channel installations. Her commissioned works included projects with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Opera North, Manchester International Festival and many more.
