Massive Attack’s 3D reads letter from humanitarian doctor describing “catastrophe” for women and babies in Rafah: Watch

Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja, AKA 3D, has featured in a video online in which he reads a letter written by a doctor based in Gaza.

The video was shared as part of the Voices For Gaza initiative, which has seen a number of musicians, including Brian Eno, read out letters penned by Palestinians based in Gaza.

The letter read out by Del Naja was written by a gynaecologist based in a hospital in Rafah, and speaks of a “catastrophe” for newborn babies in the Palestinian city. Almost 1.4 million displaced Palestinians are currently sheltering in the area, which was recently targeted in a series of Israeli airstrikes causing further destruction and death.

The doctor’s note, as read aloud by Del Naja, says: “I’ve been in humanitarian medicine for over 25 years, and this is the first time I’ve seen people bombed and unable to flee. It’s a catastrophe. People are sad; the only thing that makes them happy is a birth. But as soon as there’s a birth, there are two problems: milk and diapers.

“There’s no room in the hospital, and women have to leave three to six hours after giving birth. All these women are tired – most eat too little and are anaemic. They give birth without epidurals, and then have to leave with their babies to sleep in a tent. Some die, others are murdered.

“They lose everything in this war: their homes, their privacy, their clothes, their children, their husbands, their fathers. This war is designed to break women.”

In December, Massive Attack and a number of other acts released special vinyl and art prints to raise money for Doctors Without Borders as it carried out its work in Gaza.

Earlier this month, Sepehr, JakoJako and more contributed tracks to a compilation raising funds for a family to be evacuated from Gaza.
