London listening bar JAZU is crowdfunding to open permanent space

South London listening bar JAZU is raising money to help open a new, permanent space in Deptford.

The previously Peckham-based crew have secured a lease at 2 Deptford High Street, with plans to open later in the summer. Now the team is crowdfunding on Kickstarter to support the costs of Hi-Fi fitting and installations, furnishing the space, kitchen and bar supplies and workers’ wages. In addition to curated music programming, there’ll be a focus on high-quality cocktails and bites, serving bar snacks and small plates.

“We’ve so far operated as DIY as we possibly can; raising the money from the bar to grow as we go”, the JAZU team wrote on Instagram. “But our current circumstances mean that’s no longer viable.” On Kickstarter, cofounders Scott, Jimmy and Rosie said: “Independent businesses are on the decline, and the fastest shrinking sector is nightlife… By supporting us, you’re also championing your local area.”

So far JAZU has raised £8,500 of their £12,000 goal, which they need to meet within four days in order to secure the funding.

Launched in 2022 with pop-ups in Shoreditch and Camberwell, JAZU found a home at Market Peckham on Rye Lane last July until this past May. Its previous iterations focused on vinyl-only DJ bookings, including the likes of Kay Suzuki, Tash LC and Donna Leake, playing on a bespoke Hi-Fi fitted with vintage aesthetics on modern kit and elm horn speakers.

Ria Hylton recently spoke to the JAZU team about their equipment and mission in a new feature about audiophile listening bars‘ rising popularity.
