Kampala music school, Homeland Brass Band, launches fundraiser for permanent home
A music school in Kampala, Homeland Brass Band, has launched a fundraiser for a permanent home.
The grassroots music school was set up in 2015 by Nyege Nyege Tapes affiliates HHY & The Kampala Unit and the group’s trumpet player, producer and multi-instrumentalist Florence Lugemwa aka FloMoon or DJ Flo.
Lugemwa has been running music classes for over 25 children in the under-resourced neighbourhood of Gabba. The school offers “a safe haven for children allowing parents, often single mothers, to work while their kids are learning music in a safe environment”, according to a press release. Many of the students now view her as a “parental figure”.
Lugemwa is now looking for help in covering school expenses, school materials, care, advice and clothes with the aim of raising $20,000 to fund a permanent home. You donate to the fundraiser here.
A short documentary about the school has been released to accompany the campaign, which you can watch below.
In other Nyege Nyege Tapes news, the label recently released a four-volume retrospective of Angolan kuduro and tarraxinha pioneer DJ Znobia.
