Jayda G announces new album, ‘Guy’, on Ninja Tune
Jayda G has announced her second album, ‘Guy’, which is due to arrive via Ninja Tune on 9th June.
Co-produced with Jack Peñate (David Byrne, Adele), with contributions from Ibeyi’s Lisa-Kaindé Diaz, Ed Thomas (Stormzy, Nia Archives, Jorja Smith) and more, the 13-track LP is rooted in house, disco, R&B, and soul while embracing a more pronounced pop sensibility. Check out the album’s first single, ‘Circle Back Around’, and its accompanying video below.
More importantly, however, ‘Guy’ takes its name from Jayda G’s late father, William Richard Guy, and is features clips lifted from more than 11 hours worth of archival recordings. The album also pays tribute to her late grandmother and “the resilience and strength of Black women” (‘When She Dance’).
“I wanted the album to be a blend of storytelling, about the African American experience, death, grief, and understanding,” she says. “It’s about my dad and his story, and naturally in part my story, too, but it’s also about so many people who wanted more for themselves and went on a search to find that. This album is just so much for people who have been oppressed and who have not had easy lives.”
‘Guy’ follows Jayda G’s acclaimed 2019 debut album ‘Significant Changes’ and her Grammy-nominated hit ‘Both Of Us’.
Last November, Jayda G dropped her official remix of Taylor Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero’. She also collaborated with with Aluna on the single ‘Mine O Mine’.
