History of Rotterdam rave culture explored in new documentary
A new documentary will look at the history of Rotterdam rave culture.
Rotterdam Rave Culture: 30 Years Of Heritage documents the scene from the ’90s gabber golden age to the present day, tracing “how dance music and Rotterdam are always intertwined”.
The 45-minute film will premiere on 31st January at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), which continues until 9th February. Directed by Dennis van Rijswijk and produced by music journalist Holly Dicker, it features interviews with DJ Panic, George Ruseler, and Leonie Neervoort.
Director Dennis van Rijswijk told Resident Advisor in a statement that the documentary “takes a raver’s route through three generations of Rotterdam nightlife, from the ’90s and ’00s boom to the post-pandemic present”. He explained that it has been “filmed from as many surviving dance floors as possible over winter 2022—as well as the homes, studios and various vinyl institutions of Rotterdam”.
