Björk’s Cornucopia concert film set for limited global cinema release
A limited theatrical run has been announced for Björk’s Cornucopia concert film.
Set to premiere on 7th May, the film will be screened in over 25 countries – including Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, the US and the UK.
The film will then be available in Spain on 8th May, in Canada on 9th May, and in France on 11th May.
The Cornucopia concert tour was a monumental undertaking for the Icelandic icon, running from May 2019 through to December 2023 and consisted of 45 shows in North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia.
The tour, which was heavily inspired by the climate change crisis, featured music from her 2017 album ‘Utopia’ with work from her 2022 album ‘Fossora’ incorporated into later versions. Live shows were a hybrid mix of music and theatre with direction from Argentine filmmaker Lucretia Martel. An accompanying photobook was also released.
The Cornucopia concert film will have a runtime of one hour and 39 minutes and will be followed be the screening of three music videos curated by Björk. An edited version of the concert film was debuted on Apple TV+ via livestream in January this year.
“i am so thrilled to share an hour excerpt of the Cornucopia concert film here with you online. the full version will be played later in theatres,” Björk shared in a recent Instagram post. “this has been a long journey with hundreds of people helping out. i am so beyond enormously grateful to every single one of them.”
“i feel the modern concert film is a matriarchially friendly construct, welcomed in the current climate. where female musicians can share their worlds uncorrupted…” she continued. “in cornucopia, i was joined by musical director and multi instrumentalist bergur þórisson, percussionist manu delago, flute septet Viibra, harpist katie buckley and the hamrahlid choir.”
Sharing a statement about the forthcoming theatre release, Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing said: “We’re excited to bring this iconic concert, produced in stunning 4k and Dolby Atmos, to cinemas for this global event. This is a rare opportunity for fans to come together for this unique immersive experience, with additional Björk music videos, on the big screen, and we can’t wait to share it with audiences everywhere”.
Amy Freshwater, VP Content Acquisition Mercury Studios continued: “Experiencing a visual performer’s concert on the cinema screen isn’t just watching a show – it’s immersing yourself in the full scale of their artistry in the way Björk intended when designing the spectacle of ‘Cornucopia’.
“Now, through a long-standing partnership fostered by Will White, SVP of Content Sales, the film will find its rightful home on cinema screens in collaboration with Trafalgar Releasing ahead of global sales.”
