Kano to star in new dystopian Netflix film, The Kitchen

Kano is starring in a brand new Netflix film, The Kitchen. The dystopian movie is set in London, circa 2044, at a time when the divide between rich and poor has “been stretched to its limits”.

Real name Kane Robinson, the rapper, who made a huge impact on the streaming service earlier this year with the fourth season of Top Boy, joins an impressive list of names for the movie, which is scheduled to air next year. Daniel Kaluuya, star of Get Out, has co-written the screenplay with American Animals talent Joe Murtagh, while Michael Fassbender is credited as executive producer.

“In 2011, I was in my barbershop and there was a guy boasting about smash and grabs — kids doing million-pound heists in a minute, getting paid £200 to do it,” Kaluuya said in a statement. “I saw the potential to unlock a unique story door to the inequality, fatherhood, class, joy, resilience, courage, defiance, and care of London.”

In terms of plot, we find ourselves in a near-future UK capital when working class people have been pushed out of the city into temporary accommodation in outlying districts, making room for wealthy citizens and investors. One enclave remains — ‘the kitchen’: the last remaining social housing scheme, where residents desperately cling to the only place they’ve ever called home. Kano plays Izi Jedaiah, a young man who wants to escape the nightmare.

Last year, Kano unveiled his own rum, Duppy White, in partnership with Duppy Share Caribbean Rums. In 2019, he performed at the Royal Albert Hall as part of a tour to support his sixth studio album, ‘Hoodies All Summer’.
