Madlib launches fundraiser after losing “home, decades of music, and equipment” in Los Angeles fires
Madlib and his family have been severely affected by the devastating Los Angeles fires and are seeking support.
In a statement posted to the California rapper and producer’s Instagram yesterday, Madlib shared he and his family have lost “their home, decades of music and equipment” as fires swept LA last week. The accompanying photo shows ash, debris and rubble with only two brickwork structures left standing. A Donorbox fundraising campaign has been set up for the family.
“Your donation, no matter the amount, will provide assistance to help Madlib with immediate personal needs, essentials like clothing, temporary housing, transportation costs and the tools Madlib needs to continue creating the music that has touched so many lives”, the statement reads. “100% of your donations are tax deductible and will go directly to Madlib and his family…This is not to rebuild the physical home, this is to start rebuilding life for immediate needs.”
Madlib’s discography has been collaboration-heavy in recent years. He’s released joint albums with Four Tet, Talib Kweli and Freddie Gibbs, as well as an archival Madvillany release in 2024 with the late MF DOOM.
In November 2024, Madlib filed a lawsuit against his former manager Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, accusing him of being “engaged in rank self-dealing, concealing information from and repeatedly breaching his duties to Madlib.”
In 2021, Madlib got candid about the state of hip-hop in an interview with the Guardian: “Rap music right now should be like Public Enemy stuff, but it’s just not there… I wish it was more like how it was in the earlier days when I was coming up.”
