DJ Mikaela Jav arrested on drug trafficking charges at party in Greece
DJ Mikaela Jav, who is the cousin of Azerbaijan’s autocratic president of 20 years Ilham Aliyev, has been arrested on drug trafficking charges at a party in Greece.
The wealthy DJ, real name Izzat Khanim Javadova, was arrested and accused of organising a drug-fuelled party at a villa in Kalyvia Thorikou, a town outside of Athens, on 30th December, Mixmag reports. The party was taking place at a luxury villa where police discovered a safe in the Love The Underground Records founder’s room with more than €43,000 (£35,000) in cash and 45 packages of ecstasy, cocaine, crystal meth, LSD and other drugs. Of the 12 other people arrested at the event, three were police officers accused of illegal security and surveillance.
Javadova and nine of the other arrested people appeared before a Greek magistrate on 3rd January and have been detained on aggravated drug trafficking charges.
“The case file includes charges of both usage and drug trafficking”, a Greek police spokesperson told MEGA TV, via Balkan Insight. “There were packages of drugs in the 43-year-old’s possession and a large amount of money that was not justified, which the police believe came from drug trafficking at the party.”
“I did not organise the party, and I did not send online invitations”, Javadova said to ERT, BI reports. “Also, they did not find drugs on me”, she said, adding that the party was “a Tekno Berlin Kinky Party dedicated to love and music” and the raid and accusations are “an attack on LGBTQ people” by laying into the stereotype of the community as drug users.
Javadova and her husband Suleyman Javadov were the focus of a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation over a money-laundering scheme known as the “Azerbaijani laundromat”, according to a 2022 Guardian report. The couple were forced to pay the NCA £4 million.
In addition to her familial relation to current President Aliyev, Javadova’s late father was Azerbaijani MP Jalal Aliyev, who was the brother of current Azerbaijani president’s predecessor, President Heydar Aliyev.
