Ragga Twins’ Deman Rockers bedbound after spinal injury, fundraisers launched

David Destouche, best known as Deman Rockers of the Ragga Twins, has been left bedbound and unable to work after sustaining a spinal injury. The Hackney MC, who alongside his brother Flinty Badman played a pivotal role in shaping the UK jungle and ragga scenes, is now facing a challenging recovery. Fundraising efforts are underway to provide support during this period.

Deman sustained his injury after a fall outside his home, leading to hospitalisation and the discovery of a previously undiagnosed spinal condition. Emergency surgery was carried out by the NHS, but the operation has left him unable to perform, with significant day-to-day living costs and long-term care needs now a concern.

To assist, The Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign via JustGiving. A 14-hour event, A Dance for Deman Rockers, will also be held on Saturday, 21st December, at Brixton Jamm in London to raise funds. The line-up includes artists such as General Levy, Kenny Ken b2b Jumpin Jack Frost, Fabio & Grooverider, Ray Keith and many more. Tickets are available now.

Deman Rockers has been a key figure in UK dance music since the late 1980s, first gaining prominence on London’s Unity Soundsystem. Alongside Flinty, the Ragga Twins are credited with pushing jungle and breakbeat forward via releases including ‘Spliffhead’ and their 1991 album ‘Reggae Owes Me Money’. Their influence has continued through collaborations with artists like Aquasky and appearances on tracks by Skrillex.

The JustGiving fundraising campaign aims to meet an initial target of £5,000 to cover Deman’s immediate living expenses and support his rehabilitation. “While the Ragga Twins have remained busy for decades, their focus has always been on delivering in the dance rather than putting away funds for a rainy day,” the campaign states. “We are hoping that those who have enjoyed their work since the 1980s will be keen to put something back and help out with donations.
