Elijah announces ‘Close The App, Make The Ting’ book

London-based DJ Elijah is releasing a book, Close The App, Make The Ting.

Set to be published in February by Velocity Press, the 160-page book is designed by London-based independent graphic designer Alfie Allen. It’s based around the viral, yellow-square social media posts that Elijah has shared in recent years, which have seen him challenge conventions around how artists, DJs and other music industry figures approach their work.

A synopsis for the book reads: “‘Close The App, Make The Ting’ is a collection of ideas shared by Elijah that began in July 2021, as the COVID-19 lockdowns were ending in the UK. They started as simple notes questioning what the music and creative scenes would look like after being shut down for 18 months shared regularly on Instagram, then developed into a multimedia project that spanned visual installations, an album with grime MC Jammz, a club night and a lecture series that toured the world.

“This book is for anyone producing or thinking of producing creative work, that needs something outside of ‘advice’. These are evergreen artistic prompts that will inspire new ways of approaching being an artist in the 2020s.”

The yellow-square series on Instagram has previously led to Elijah putting on a series of talks and workshops at different places, while he also took on a role at London university SOAS.

Close The App, Make The Ting can be pre-ordered here.

It’s been a busy year for Velocity Press. As well as opening its own shop in London, it recently published Ben Murphy’s Ears To The Ground: Adventures in Field Recording and Electronic Music, which examines the relationship between electronic music artists and landscapes in the UK, Ireland, and beyond.

Velocity Press also released a second edition of Jim Ottewill’s Out Of Space: How UK Cities Shaped Rave Culture in April, and Let The Music Play: How R&B Fell In Love With 80s Synths in January.
