Charli XCX debuts SOPHIE tribute track, ‘So I’, at Billboard Women In Music Event: Watch

Charli XCX has debuted a new song, which she says is dedicated to SOPHIE.

She performed the unreleased song, titled ‘So I’, live for the first time earlier this week as part of Billboard‘s Women In Music event. Its lyrics references SOPHIE’s 2017 single ‘It’s Okay To Cry’, which marked the lead track for the late artist’s debut album ‘Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides’.

Charli had previously told interviewers that her new album would feature a track that references SOPHIE, who was a friend and longtime collaborator of her’s. You can watch video of the performance of ‘So I’ below.

Speaking previously about ‘So I’ to NME, Charli said: “It’s probably not as simply put as [a tribute] but there is a song on the record which talks about my relationship with SOPHIE. Essentially, dealing with grief is what the song is about. It’s very real. All the lyrics are things that I would text my friends – the kind of dialogue and the voice of this record is very conversational and very diar-etic for sure.”

The two artists first collaborated on Charli’s 2015 EP ‘Vroom Vroom’, and went on to combine on tracks such as ‘After The Afterparty’ and ‘No Angel’, among others.

SOPHIE passed away in January 2021, following a tragic accident in Athens. Read Anna Cafolla’s tribute to the visionary artist here.

Charli will release her new album, ‘BRAT’, which she has described as a “club record”, sometime this summer.
