Justice announce new album, ‘Hyperdrama’, share two singles: Listen
Justice have announced details of their new album, ‘Hyperdrama’.
The legendary French duo – comprised of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay – will release their fourth studio album on 26th April via Ed Banger Records / Because Music. Coinciding with the announcement, the band have shared two singles from the forthcoming LP – ‘One Night/All Night (starring Tame Impala)’ and ‘Generator’.
Described by the duo as the “touchstone of this record”, ‘One Night/All Night’ was first teased via Justice’s social media channels last week. “We were like okay, let’s make a song that’s all techno, then all disco, and then it’s all techno again,” they said on its creation. “It’s a bit like when you have wine that doesn’t fit well with what you’re doing and they’re fighting for attention but it still tastes good.” The single arrives alongside a visual produced by Phantasm and directed by Anton Tammi, which you can watch here.
Speaking on second single ‘Generator’, the band add: “To us, this one sounds like ‘Getaway’ by the Salsoul Orchestra, but with gabber and classic ‘90s techno sounds. We love all kinds of music that don’t really appear in Justice. But I would say that the main two types of music that coexist since the beginning are disco funk and more electronic music. And particularly on ‘Generator’ we make them coexist, but not really in a peaceful way. We like this idea of making them fight a bit for attention.”
Swedish director Anton Tammi – known for his work for The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours’ – also created the artwork for Justice’s highly anticipated new album. “I suggested to them that what if we dive in? What if their music video was a journey inside the cross?” shared Tammi. “I dreamed of creating a piece like this. A strange and experimental object that looks like rave lighting inside human lungs and strobe light around a human heart.”
‘Hyperdrama’ will mark the fourth studio album from the Parisian duo, and the first since 2016’s ‘Woman’. Despite teasing new material on a couple of occasions since then, a 2021 solo album from the group’s Gaspard Augé has been the only new project to materialise.
News that the group will be emerging from their five-year hiatus was revealed in June 2023 by Ed Banger label founder, Pedro Winter (AKA Busy P). He later revealed that the forthcoming LP gives him the same goosebumps as when he first heard the duo’s landmark debut, ‘Cross’.
During their hiatus, Justice celebrated their decade-and-a-half milestone with a slew of reissues, including a 15th anniversary deluxe edition of their landmark debut album, ‘†’, and fresh vinyl pressings of 2008’s celebrated live record, ‘A Cross the Universe’, and the Dior soundtrack, ‘Planisphere’, which was first released the same year.
Last week, Justice was announced as a topline act at this summer’s Coachella festival, which will mark the debut performance of their brand new live show. The festival adds to an already busy slate of festival appearances for the band this year, with more dates to be announced soon.
