An outdoor music space is opening in Manchester later this month.

Escape to Freight Island, a new concept from the likes of Homoelectric founders and the teams behind Gorilla and the Albert Hall, will open its doors in mid-July at Manchester’s Depot Mayfield with a selection of music, immersive art, bars, secret dens, festival takeovers and family events.

At the 10,000-capacity venue, attendees will be able to experience a 70s New York-inspired roller disco, a hidden high-fi audio bar, which will transform into a karaoke venue called Queen Samantha’s, and a retro arcade games corridor.

James Heather, development director at U+I for the Mayfield Partnership, said: “Mayfield has over the last three years been re-established in the hearts and minds of both Mancunians and visitors to our city as an outstanding location for culture and entertainment. With Escape to Freight Island, our partners at Broadwick Venues have assembled an amazing line-up of operators, brands and innovators which will take this to the next level.”

The first area to open later this month will be ‘Platform 15’. The venue will launch a ‘Safe + Social Manifesto’, and a limited 600-capacity first phase. Freight Island will expand to welcome 2,500 people when fully open to the public.

You can sign up for Escape to Freight Island pre-sale access here.
