Samantha Michelle Discusses ‘POP X 4’ and Afro-House Roots

Samantha Michelle has been a force on the global DJ circuit, gracing high-profile events from Fashion Week to Burning Man. Now, with her debut single “POP X 4,” she’s carving out her space in the Afro-house and amapiano genre, merging traditional rhythms with modern electronic elements.

In this exclusive interview, Samantha shares insights into her musical journey, creative process, and what’s next for her as an artist.

On the Release of “POP X 4”

T.H.E – What inspired the sound and concept behind “POP X 4,” and why did you choose Afro-house and amapiano elements for your debut?

Samantha Michelle – I fell into an Afro-house rabbit hole about a year and a half ago, and I never quite came out! There’s something about the percussion patterns, rolling instrumental builds, and log drums. It’s a genre that makes me feel connected to the past and the far corners of our world. That feeling of global connectivity is at the core of what I want to put out through my music.

T.H.E – You mentioned wanting to bridge cultures and sonic traditions. How did you incorporate these elements, and what was the most exciting part of this process?

Samantha Michelle – We were watching Amapiano Boiler Room sets for inspiration, and from there devised the structure of “POP X 4.” The Afro-Cuban rhythm and Santana-influenced guitar came later in the process. Slotting the vocal sample into the project was an exciting moment—it clicked in place the positive, sunshine vibe I was after.

T.H.E – You’ve played music at exclusive venues worldwide. How did your experiences at places like Fashion Week, Cannes, and Burning Man influence the production of “POP X 4”?

Samantha Michelle – Performing at such diverse venues taught me to read the crowd and adapt. Those experiences built an instinctual, carnal knowledge that naturally flows into my production process.

On Her DJ Journey

T.H.E – From playing Northern Soul parties in London to high-profile events globally, how has your style evolved over the years?

Samantha Michelle – I started with 1960s and 70s soul, rock, and funk. When I moved to NY, I got bit by the electronica bug and transitioned to contemporary disco house, Afro-house, and more. Now, I’m harmonizing all of it together.

T.H.E – Opening for legends like Duran Duran and Nile Rodgers must have been incredible. What did those experiences teach you about engaging with the audience?

Samantha Michelle – Those gigs taught me the value of blending the unexpected. They also emphasized creating collective nostalgia moments, allowing audiences to connect deeply with the set.

Artistic and Personal Insights

T.H.E – As a DJ known for your eclectic taste, how do you decide which genres to bring into your music?

Samantha Michelle – It depends on my mood. I let creative impulses guide me, often starting with a small element—a riff, a pad, or even a cymbal riser—and building from there.

T.H.E – How do you see electronic music evolving to incorporate more cross-cultural elements?

Samantha Michelle – Dance music is moving in an exciting direction where global sounds are becoming mainstream. I envision an expansion of female presence in this male-dominated space, especially in blending deep, worldly vibes.

T.H.E – What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away when they experience “POP X 4”?

Samantha Michelle – It’s a hip-shaking, booty-bouncing dance banger. I hope it makes listeners feel free, fun, and ready to embrace life.

Looking Ahead

T.H.E – This is your debut single—what can fans expect next?

Samantha Michelle – My next single drops on November 22nd! It’s a reimagining of Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, blending world dance music with a classical love song. Expect more harmonization of the unexpected.

T.H.E – With more releases on the horizon, how do you see your career shifting from DJing to producing your own music?

Samantha Michelle – There’s nothing like seeing a crowd respond to a song you’ve made. I’m excited for my music to connect with people beyond my live shows and become part of their daily lives.

Conclusion

Samantha Michelle’s journey from global DJ to music producer showcases her versatility and passion for innovation. With “POP X 4” setting the stage for more Afro-house and amapiano explorations, fans are in for an exciting ride. Be sure to check out her upcoming releases and experience the unique fusion she brings to the electronic music scene.
