T.H.E – Hi Jacob, how are you doing?

Jacob Colon – I’m doing great. I’m really excited about my new record ‘Lost Frequency.’ Creating this track was a lot of fun, and I feel like my sound is continuously developing.

T.H.E – To start, when was the last time you felt creatively stuck in the studio?

Jacob Colon – Well, I think that may happen almost every day when you sit on a project for a long time. Personally, this has happened to me more times than I’d like to admit. As I strive to create something new and fresh, there’s always that feeling of being stuck. You want to make something that hasn’t been heard before, but at the same time, you’re not always sure if it’s coming together as intended.

T.H.E – What’s the last plugin or piece of gear you couldn’t resist buying?

That would be Humanoid by Baby Audio. It’s a really cool plugin that can transform any vocal into something unique. You’d have to try it out and explore the presets to get a sense of what I mean.

T.H.E – When was the last time you recorded a sound from outside the studio for a track?

Jacob Colon – I haven’t done that too often lately. Let me explore that now that you mention it.

T.H.E – What’s the last collaboration that pushed you out of your comfort zone?

Jacob Colon – I did some audio work for a commercial ad aimed at musicians and other creatives. It was a really fulfilling project because it combined music with self-development, a field I’m passionate about. It was a fun challenge to work outside the typical studio setting.

T.H.E When was the last time you scrapped a nearly finished track, and why?

If by scrapped you mean moving on, it’s happened more often than I’d like. I don’t necessarily delete projects, but I’ll often set aside tracks that are 99% done. Sometimes I get so lost in the details that I start to feel numb to the main idea. It’s more important to move forward and capture creative energy than to spend hours finding the perfect kick drum.

T.H.E – What was the last sample you used that gave a track new life?

T.H.E – When was the last time you learned a new production technique?

Jacob Colon – I try to stay as educated as possible, so I watch tutorials every day. A cool technique I recently learned was increasing the attack and shortening the release on a hi-hat to get a crisp sound that cuts through the mix better.

T.H.E – What’s the last piece of advice you received that shifted your approach to production?

Jacob Colon – Nothing too groundbreaking, actually. Mostly, it’s been about taking risks and learning as I go. The key is to look for that feeling of excitement in the process and not worry about making everything perfect.

T.H.E – When was the last time you stayed up all night working on a track?

Jacob Colon – It happens sporadically. Just a couple of days ago, I had an idea that kept me up all night, and I’m excited to be setting it up for a future release soon.

T.H.E – What was the last track you finished that you’re most proud of?

Jacob Colon – It’s always my latest release. As I continue to learn new techniques and explore sounds, my latest tracks always feel the most exciting to me.
