Tech-house overtakes techno as most popular electronic music genre

Tech-house has overtaken techno as the most popular genre of electronic music, according to a newly-published business report as part of the International Music Summit in Ibiza.

Released yesterday (27th April), the report states that sales of tech-house music overtook techno on online music store Beatport in 2021. According to the report, techno sits at second place, while house music remains third in the rankings. It also indicates that amapiano “exploded globally” last year.

The report also revealed some encouraging statistics about the health of electronic music in general. As well as noting that vinyl sales were up 51% in 2021 – with CD sales seeing a 9% rise – the report values the dance and electronic music market at $6 billion – a significant 71% rise on last year.

In a statement, the report’s author David Boyle said: “The industry is buzzing. I heard tons of excitement in my interviews with artists, promoters, agents and labels in the last month. Partly because, as predicted last year, electronic music is back once again.”

“Led by market share gains in the UK and Germany, we found growth in 16 countries as the joy and energy of electronic music soundtracks the world’s post-pandemic recovery,” added Boyle.
