Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello: “We had an album, we scrapped it”

Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello has revealed that the trio “scrapped” the expected follow up to their 2022 album, ‘Paradise Again’.

Speaking with Billboard, the DJ and producer was asked about the status of a new album from the trio, which drew an initial response of laughter. He went on to say: “We had an album, we scrapped it, and we put out singles.”

He continued: “We are still always working on music and when we feel like [what we have] is good enough, we will put it out. As a creator, if you’re not feeling something, it’s not going to see daylight.”

The group had previously hinted that a new album was on the way. In July last year, during his set with Sebastian Ingrosso at Tomorrowland, Angello introduced the SHM single ‘Ray Of Solar’ by saying: “This is coming on an album we’re dropping later this summer.”

In the year since, the group have released two singles, the long-awaited ‘Lioness’ and ‘Finally’, a collaboration with Alicia Keys that reimagines Kings Of Tomorrow and Julie McKnight’s house classic of the same name. They also played Tomorrowland together as a trio for the first time since 2012.

Elsewhere in the Billboard interview, Angello spoke about his new solo single, ‘Hooligans’, saying the track had initially been made especially for his Coachella set earlier this year. “I needed that old ravey energy of the hoover sound, so it was made for the show to get an effect,” he said. “The vocals were chopped up especially for the live show.”

He also said fans can expect plenty of new Swedish House Mafia music in the near future despite their scrapped album. “There’s always a lot coming, especially with us,” he said. “We’ve made so much music in the past couple of years, so we’re just going to have this flow of putting out records.”

In the interview, Angello also spoke about the success of Swedish House Mafia’s hit single ‘Don’t You Worry Child’ and the evolution of EDM, among other topics of discussion. Watch the full interview below or here.

Last month, Swedish House Mafia’s Sebastian Ingrosso also shared a new solo single, ‘Flood’.
