Public Enemy announce Royal Albert Hall show celebrating 35 years of ‘Fight The Power’
Public Enemy have announced a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Friday 27th June. The date will mark 35 years of the pioneering hip-hop group’s landmark single, ‘Fight the Power’.
The one-off event will see Chuck D, Flavor Flav and DJ Lord bring their inimitable blend of progressive and hardcore East Coast rap to one of the world’s most famous classical music venues.
“We are honoured to have this opportunity to stand on the Royal Albert Hall stage and perform under the same renowned roof that the greats from Hendrix to Pavarotti, from the Beatles to my brothers Cypress Hill have,” said Chuck D. “Thank you, London. We’ll see you soon.”
This isn’t the first time hip-hop or electronic music have been platformed in the Royal Albert Hall. Last year, Nas performed two dates there, while Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra performed there together last July, making their 1991 Simpsons cameo a reality. That show is set to be released as an album in June.
Other electronic acts who’ve played the venue in recent years include AIR, Annie Lennox, The Chemical Brothers and Bonobo, whose set you can watch in full via DJ Mag’s YouTube channel.
In 2023, Chuck D narrated the docu-drama Can You Dig It? A Hip-Hop Origin Story, a five-part series released to mark the 50th anniversary of the genre. Around that time, Public Enemy reissued their seminal sophomore album, ‘It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back‘. Last year, member Flavor Flav helped raise money so a Paralympian’s family could attend the Paris games.
