‘No Photos On The Dancefloor!’: new compilations span Berlin techno from 1992 to today

News

A new pair of compilations, ‘No Photos On The Dance Floor! Berlin Techno 1992–Today’, are set to explore the development and history of Berlin techno over the last thirty years via a number of key tracks.

Split into two parts, the first covering 1992 to 2006 and the second covering 2007 to the present day, the compilations feature classics, such as 3MB and Juan Atkins’ ‘The 4th Quarter’, MMM’s ‘Donna’, and Maurizio’s remix of Vainqueur’s ‘Lyot’, as well as more recent well-loved tracks, such as Barker’s ‘Cascade Effect’, Avalon Emerson’s ‘The Frontier’, and one of Shed’s tracks under his WAX alias.

There are also appearances across the compilations from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Ellen Allien, Ben Klock and Modeselektor.

The compilations have been compiled by Heiko Hoffmann, and follow on from a photography and video art exhibition by the same name that was co-curated by Hoffmann and shown at C/O Berlin in late 2019. The exhibition included works by photographers and visual artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Berghain’s Sven Marquardt, and Camille Blake, that dealt with Berlin’s club culture since the fall of the wall. It was followed in 2020 by a book of the same name which place images from the exhibition alongside interviews and personal essays.

The first part of ‘No Photos On The Dance Floor! Berlin Techno 1992–Today’ will be released on June 4th, while the second part will follow on June 25th. They will both be released digitally and on vinyl, while there will also be expanded CD editions featuring additional tracks by Ricardo Villalobos, Rødhåd and Efdemin.

It was revealed earlier this week that Berlin will soon recognise clubs as cultural institutions, upgrading them from the current entertainment status they have.
