Nia Archives releases Brazilian choir-sampling new single and video, 'Baianá': Watch

Nia Archives has released a new track, called ‘Baianá’.

The first new material to emerge from the UK artist since her ‘Forbidden Feelingz’ EP came out in March of this year, ‘Baianá’ samples the traditional Brazilian choir Barbatuques.

It comes backed by a video that Nia Archives co-directed herself together with longtime friend and collaborator Delphino. The visual, which you can watch below, takes us on a trip to Rio de Janeiro, and was shot earlier this month.

It captures the city through the artist’s eye, as she takes in the city’s sights, including Christ the Redeemer, the waters of the Copacabana, and playing football in the Rocina favela with local kids. She’s also seen digging for rare samba, Bossa Nova and Baile funk in the city’s record shops.

“I’ve always been a massive fan of samba music, Bossa Nova music and Brazilian culture and had been a fan of the Barbatuques for a while,” Nia Archives said in a statement about her new track. “When I was looking through my samba / Bossa playlist and thinking about songs to sample, ‘Baianá’ was the one that stood out for me.

“When I started making it, the original version was quite bouncy which I wanted to make harder, so I flipped it into this crazy amen break roller with a Reese bassline. I feel like this one really showcases my work and style as a producer.”
