New initiative, Sisters In Sound, launched for young women of colour in music

Singer and songwriter Mahalia has announced the launch of a new workshop and event series, Sisters In Sound, aiming to support young women of colour in music.

The project is the work of youth-led charity Small Green Shoots, an organisation with whom Mahalia has a personal connection, having been mentored by charity founder Natalie Wade to secure her first manager and navigate her way through the music industry after being signed at the age of 13.

With the aim of addressing the imbalance in opportunities for young women of colour, within the fields of both music production and DJing, Sisters In Sound is inviting people to sign up to learn from those already working within both areas via a series of workshops.

It will all end with a live showcase event on 8th March, International Women’s Day, at London’s Tileyard Gallery, where those involved will be invited to present the skills they have learnt via Sisters In Sound in front of a live audience.

The project itself will involve four interactive workshops covering DJing, music production, content editing and live event management, and industry professionals from across all four areas will be providing the lessons. It all forms part of Dr. Martens’ recently launched Tough As You initiative.
