New documentary, ‘Underplayed’, examines gender imbalance in electronic music

A new documentary called ‘Underplayed’ is set to explore the issue of sexism and gender imbalance in the electronic music industry.
Filmed over the course of 2019’s summer festival season, director Stacey Lee’s film explores the topic via the work and views of key artists in the current scene such as Rezz, Alison Wonderland, Nervo and TOKiMONSTA, alongside interviews with artists including DJ Duffey and Suzanne Ciani.
“The women who are operating in this artistic space and producing chart-topping tracks fail to receive the recognition that the men in their field are showered with,” the film’s description says, though it ultimately hopes to strike a positive tone via centring artists who are gaining immense success.
‘Underplayed’ is set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, September 19th, with a set following its debut from Rezz, one of the primary artists featured in the film. You can watch a trailer below ahead of its debut.
Earlier this year, Alison Wonderland shared her full live show from a 2019 appearance at Colorado’s Red Rocks, while TOKiMONSTA last month shared a new remix EP, ‘Come And Go Remixed’.
