Lady of the House announces winners of first production competition
Lady of the House has revealed the winners of its first production competition.
The platform cofounded by Laila Mckenzie enlisted BBC Radio 1’s Jaguar and Charlie Tee, Defected’s Sam Divine and Brit Dance Act 2022 winner Becky Hill to select the winners, who’ll make up the debut release on Lady of the House’s label.
Out this Friday, 14th October, the ‘Competition Winners’ EP will feature: Angel Lee’s Bill’s Groove’, featuring LKP, selected by Jaguar; Esther Turner’s ‘Swayin”, chosen by Sam Divine; EVALINA’s ‘Vivid’, picked by Becky Hill; and Jamurai’s ‘Meditation’, Charlie Tee’s choice. Find pre-save information on the EP ahead of its release here.
The four winning artists will receive mentorship and counsel from the judges, their “Godmothers”, as well as advisers from CAA, Broadwick Live, Beatport, The Media Nanny, Night Time Economy Solutions and more. Their tracks will also get a remix from an established artist, professional promotional campaign and the opportunity to perform at a LabelWorx ADE event on 19th October.
“I never dreamt that when we launched this record label that we would receive hundreds of demos in only six weeks,” Mckenzie said. “It shows me that as much as we say as an industry that we’ve not got enough women and non-binary producers, it’s not for lack of talent; it’s a matter of finding them, believing in them, investing in them, platforming them, amplifying them. All of these things that we don’t seem to be doing for women and non-binary people.”
Lady of the House aims to continue this production competition, release and support programme with a varying group of judges to A&R releases. For more on the competition programme, revisit Ria Hylton’s interview with Mckenzie from May.
Lady of the House launched in 2020 to publish a book celebrating 150 women who shaped house music.
