Influential UK DJ Steve Sutherland has died.

The longstanding DJ and broadcaster, who was a pivotal figure on the UK club circuit and airwaves, was a champion of UK Garage, R&B, grime and hip-hop, among other styles. As well as being a presenter on stations like Choice and Galaxy FM, Sutherland was co-founder of party brand Twice As Nice, and held residencies at iconic clubs such as Pacha Ibiza and Ministry Of Sound.

Sutherland was widely celebrated over the years for his invaluable contribution to Black British music, and won four MOBO Awards for Best Club DJ between 2000 and 2006.

Tributes have been paid to the legendary DJ since the sad news of his death was shared on Friday. “His contribution to the Black British Music scene will never be forgotten,” wrote MOBO on Twitter. Tributes have also come from figures including Trevor Nelson, Jumpin’ Jack Frost and Beverly Knight.

Our condolences go out to Sutherland’s family and friends at this time.
