Glasgow urged to mark anniversaries of Sub Club and Optimo

City council officials in Glasgow are being urged to mark the anniversaries of two world famous nightlife institutions in Scotland’s club capital.

Sub Club celebrates its 35th birthday in 2022, while the club night Optimo (Espacio) reaches its 25th year. A local councillor, Jon Molyneux, has requested that both are recognised thanks to the service they have paid to the region’s electronic music scene.

“These businesses have helped Glasgow establish an enduring national and international reputation for producing and enjoying high quality electronic, house, and techno music,” Molyneux said, according to a report by Glasgow Live. “Council recognises their substantial cultural and economic impact on the city and their role in encouraging and nurturing a steady stream of talented DJs and producers, many of whom have gone on to achieve international success, and that this continues today… Council thanks their respective founders and key figures for their contributions to the city of Glasgow.”

The politician then went on to emphasise the significance of the live music industry, and the need to continue supporting events and venues after the pandemic, including offering protection from new developments through the Agent of Change planning policy.

Both anniversaries are made even more significant due to the losses Glasgow’s globally renowned club scene has suffered in the past decade. In early 2020, The Art School went into liquidation, while 2015 saw world famous venue The Arches shuttered for the last time after administrators were called in. A year later, Club 69 in nearby Paisley, also closed, although this has been resurrected in recent times.
