Electronic music community widely donates to fundraisers and initiatives following George Floyd killing

News

Electronic artists and fans are among the hundreds to have donated to organisations and funds in aid of protesters in Minneapolis and black community initiatives following the killing of George Floyd.

On Monday, 25th May, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was killed by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin. Footage of the arrest shows Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes, ignoring him as he repeatedly pleads, “I can’t breathe”.

The four police officers who arrested Floyd have been fired, but until today (Friday, 29th May) none were arrested or charged with his death. In the aftermath of the tragic killing, hundreds of protestors have taken to the streets of Minneapolis. Protestors have been met with further hostility from police and the Trump Administration.

In response, hundreds have taken to social media to share donation links to organisations and initiatives in aid of George Floyd’s family, protesters and local initiatives working with the black community. Artists and DJs throughout the dance music community, including Scratcha DVA, Loraine James, Martyn, Four Tet, Fauzia and Mizz Dee Diggs, have encouraged others to donate by asking peers to match their own donations across social media. The Minnesota Freedom Fund helps arrested protestors access bail money as the protests continue.
