Don Zilla launches fundraiser following robbery at home studio in Kampala

Don Zilla has launched a fundraiser following a robbery at his home studio in Kampala, Uganda earlier last month.

The DJ, producer and Nyege Nyege affiliate is facing the loss of around £2,600 worth of music equipment after his home was broken into – including a computer, MIDI keyboard, and sound card, along with synths, microphones, hard drives and other valuables.

Created last month, the fundraising campaign is seeking to help the producer and cultural activist raise 13,500 zł (around £2,600 GBP) to replace the stolen equipment.

“Making tunes is my passion and joy, and I feel the urge to get back to work as soon as possible,” Zilla shared in the campaign description, “so, I have set up this fundraiser in order to recover quickly and move on to finalizing the last tracks of bass-heavy devotions of my feature release, featuring the finest constellation of original Kampalan artists.”

The producer was in the midst of finishing his second album, and the follow-up to 2021’s ‘Ekizikiza Mubwengula’, when the robbery took place. Released via Ugandan underground imprint, Hakuna Kulala, the record was described as a “bold step” and a “bejeweled tapestry”.

Anyone who donates to the fundraising campaign will receive a link to Zilla’s new unreleased track, ‘Eeh’. “A gift from me to you for your kindness,” he noted beneath the pledge.

In the case of receiving a surplus of donations, the producer added that he will “invest it into creating another meeting and practicing space for the creative artists of my area.”

“I thank everyone so much who would contribute and donate, and I humbly and greatly appreciate every bit of support, no matter the amount… Be well!”
