DJ Voices mixes latest edition of Finn and Local Action's Mixtape Club series

Up next in Finn and Local Action’s Mixtape Club series is the New York-based DJ Voices with a mix called ‘Avoiding Bad Thoughts’.

The Nowadays crew member says the mix is inspired by the long drives of her youth in Florida. “Growing up in Florida, driving was a significant part of everyday life,” she writes in the mixtape’s notes. “It was also one of the most formative ways of listening to music for me. Some of my fondest musical memories involve driving, usually alone and for long stretches, completely immersed in the sounds I was hearing as the road stretched out ahead of me.”

“Largely for this reason, driving was also my favourite means of ‘escape’ as it provided emotional release and a way to get in touch with a deeper sense of imagination and creativity,” Voices says. “So for this mix I wanted to make something that I imagined I would listen to while driving, something literally transportive with plenty of dreamy sounds to zone out to… I think for me there’s a shared affinity between the club and the car as forms of escape through being totally consumed by the music you’re hearing.”

Across ‘Avoiding Bad Thoughts”s 90 minutes, DJ Voices, a founding member of the now-defunct NYC-based DJ group Working Women, blends music by Ayuji, Lowplay, Quelaan, Nathan Kofi, Wavesense and Nvs, whose track inspired the title of the mix.

This marks the ninth overall entry in Finn and Local Action’s free mixtape series, launched in 2021 to provide DJs with paid work in the pandemic. So far this year, DJ Wawa and Club Fitness have contributed mixes.
