Burmese diaspora DJs to play Myanmar earthquake relief event in London
A fundraiser for Myanmar earthquake relief will be held in South London next month featuring a line-up of Burmese and East and Southeast Asian diaspora DJs.
Deptford community venue, radio station and label AAJA will host the Ka (Dance): Myanmar Earthquake Relief Fundraiser on Friday 16th May from 6PM BST till midnight. Organisers Ambient Babestation Meltdown (Rye Wax), Izzi (Daytimers) and DJ Batcum (aka KOSO) will be DJing the event alongside special guests the butcher bird and Siiio, with Burmese chef Robert Khaing serving up food and snacks to fuel dancers. Wares from Burmese traders Rice Over Everything and Seint Jewellery will also be available.
“Myanmar is still home to me,” KOSO said in the event’s announcement. “…Having lived there recently, I’ve seen how hard life already is due to the political turmoil. This earthquake was the last thing people needed and it’s heartbreaking to see so many lives lost, lives that could have been saved with better infrastructure and support.”
Organisers will be donating all proceeds to Better Burma.
On 28th March, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, killing 3,770 people and injuring 5,106, with 106 still missing, according to recent figures from Euro News and AP. One month on, the UN has put out a renewed call for aid, as the country, in the midst of a civil war since 2021 is still reeling from the natural disaster on top of the ongoing political turmoil.
