Avicii’s former manager files defamation lawsuit against True Stories filmmaker
Arash “Ash” Pournouri, Avicii’s former manager, has reportedly filed a defamation lawsuit against Levan Tsikurishvili, the filmmaker behind the 2017 documentary Avicii: True Stories.
According to reports in the Sweden Herald andExpressen, the suit was filed at Stockholm District Court, and claims the film misrepresents Pournouri’s role in Avicii’s career, using selective editing in order to damage his reputation. It specifically accuses Tsikurishvili of inaccurately portraying him as someone who pressured the late DJ to perform against medical advice.
Pournouri is pursuing the case in the hopes of securing a “private prosecution” against the filmmaker. He has previously publicly issued criticisms of the film’s portrayal of him, and has now seemingly taken those issues further following a recent Instagram post shared by Tsikurishvili. Without specifically mentioning Pournouri, the documentary-maker stated in his post that the film was about Avicii rather than anyone else, but claimed that if it had gone deeper into a “certain person’s” role in the late artist’s career, it would have been “1000% worse” for the unnamed person.
Responding in a post shared to Instagram, Pournouri didn’t mention Tsikurishvili by name but said “a false external narrative” was being created about him, “which, out of respect for [Avicii’s] memory and family, I have actively chosen not to engage in”.
He continued: “That courtesy has not been extended to me. Lies and false accusations by certain individuals continue with the aim of causing me harm and to profit from a tragedy. Consequently, I have been left with no other choice but to file lawsuits with the main objective for the lies to stop and the facts to be known, once and for all.”
Tsikurishvili has not yet responded publicly to the lawsuit.
Avicii tragically died by suicide at the age of 28 in April 2018.
Another documentary on the late artist, Avicii – I’m Tim, was shared via Netflix late last year.
