Apple announces new M2 chip and MacBook Pro line

Apple has announced the arrival of its next-generation M2 chip and MacBook Pro line.

The newly redesigned MacBook Air is powered by the M2 processor — the successor to the M1 chip, which was first launched in 2020 — while the updated version of the current 13-inch MacBook Pro now also features an M2 chip. There had been speculation that the new models would be available in pastel colours similar to the new iMac, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The Air model is rendered in four finishes: silver, space grey, plus new starlight gold and midnight blue.

The “strikingly thin” MacBook Air redesign offers a 20 percent noise reduction compared to its predecessor and will feature a MagSafe cable and up to 18 hours of battery life. The MacBook Pro now promises up to 20 hours of battery life as well as an “active cooling” system when you push your machine to the max.

According to Apple, the M2 promises to “deliver new levels of power-efficient performance and capabilities to the completely redesigned MacBook Air and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro.” The M2 will have an 18% faster CPU, a 35% faster GPU, 50% more memory bandwidth, and a 40% faster Neural Engine than the M1.

“M2 starts the second generation of M-series chips and goes beyond the remarkable features of M1,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “With our relentless focus on power-efficient performance, M2 delivers a faster CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. And along with higher memory bandwidth and new capabilities like ProRes acceleration, M2 continues the tremendous pace of innovation in Apple silicon for the Mac.”

Prices for the MacBook Air start at £1,249 including VAT, and the MacBook Pro 13” at £1,349 including VAT, with orders opening up in July. Find out more at apple.com.
