Animistic Beliefs release new album, 'Merdeka', on NAAFI: Listen

Rotterdam-based duo Animistic Beliefs have released their new album, ‘Merdeka’, on NAAFI.

Their debut on the label, the album is said to explore the trauma left behind by (post-)colonialism, as the two artists, real names Linh Luu and Marvin Lalihatu, explore their respective cultural heritages and look back to childhood memories.

The album takes in breakbeats, fast techno and “(Southeast Asian) tribal music”, as well as gentler, ambient music, according to press materials. It also incorporates Indonesian scales and recordings of the Tahuri (a wind instrument made out of a conch shell), Totobuang (Gamelan-like gongs) and Tifa drums.
