Akai unveils stem separation for legendary sampler, MPC Stems

Akai has unveiled MPC Stems, a major update to its MPC range of samplers that allows users to import fully mixed tracks before separating the audio into its constituent parts.

For now, Stems is only available via the MPC desktop software, so it’s not yet possible to isolate stems in the standalone hardware. Stems is supported via controller mode on the Live series, MPC One, MPC One +, MPC X, MPC XSE, MPC Key 61, MPC Key 37, and MPC Studio MK2.

Often, when separating stems using AI, artefacts are left behind as the algorithm struggles to accurately identify each part. Akai says its stem separation tech is powered by zPlane, meaning that it achieves “superior” sound quality.

Speaking about the launch, Head of MPC Artist Relations, Andy Mac, said, “Building on our legacy, MPC Stems represents a monumental leap forward in sampling technology for producer communities around the world. With MPC Stems, we’re pioneering a future where producers have unparalleled creative freedom. This is the next chapter in music production, and we are very excited to see what people create.”

Stem separation has quickly become a sought-after feature for music makers over the past few years, first appearing inside iZotope plugins before making its way to DJ software. Now, Akai say Stems introduces a new era of sampling, giving anyone access to isolated drums, vocals, basslines and musical elements, without the need for multi-tracks or acapellas.

MPC Stems is an add-on for MPC desktop software and costs $9.99. It can be purchased from the MPC store. In February, Akai also announced a new all-in-one music production unit called the MPC Keys 37.
